Foodie News x Restaurant Reviews x Hip-Hop Attitude

In 2010, I (Nick Love) spent over 45% of my annual income eating out at some of Atlanta's best (and worst) restaurants. So, who better to guide you through the city's crowded dining terrain?? Now, I, along with my team of Hip-Hop generation foodies, will expose and review ATL's newest hits, hidden gems, and old favorites. Hopefully, this blog will earn us a free meal or two while we point you guys in the direction of some good food and steer you away from the wackness. Let's eat!!!

Review: DEMITRIS RESTAURANT | Good 'Hood Food

Name: Demitris Restaurant
Cuisine: Breakfast
Neighborhood: Eastside, Decatur
Address: 3771 Covington Hwy. Decatur, GA 30032
Phone: 404-284-1451

DECATUR, GA!!!  Once a quiet eastern suburb in Metro Atlanta, now a heavily populated, fairly rough urban terrain.  It's home sweet home to myself and, at one time or another, home to several of ATL's most famous hitmakers like B.O.B, Lloyd, Travis Porter, Gucci Mane, and more.  Now, I'm not talking about the more friendly confines of Downtown Decatur.  I'm referring to unincorporated DeKalb County and streets like Candler Rd, Wesley Chapel, Glenwood, and Covington Hwy.  And, it's on Covington Highway that you will find my absolute FAVORITE breakfast spot, Demitris Restaurant.

Busy day at Demitris
I was actually introduced to this place by my big homey Block (VP at Sony Records and CEO of Block Enterainment - Yung Joc, Gorilla Zoe, Boyz In Da Hood).  Located within minutes of infamous DeKalb County landmarks like Club Primetime (nightclub for 18 and up crowd), The Cave (after hours spot), the 285 Flea Market, and, of course, the DeKalb County Jail, this place seemingly sits at the center of the hood.  But, when you walk in the door, the warmth and friendliness of a true down home, southern diner shine through.

Dias, the owner, in the kitchen cheffin' it up!
Upon entry, you're greeted by a usually smiling (but often busy) Dias (the owner and head cook) and the best waitress in the world - Tracy.  Although I'm pretty sure that Tracy is the ONLY waitress there, no worries.  She handles a full to capacity restaurant effortlessly.  In the many times I've been here, I've NEVER had bad or slow service!!!  You'll also notice that it's a small, quaint place.  More like your mother's kitchen than IHOP.  Wooden chairs and vinyl table cloths are the decor.  But, it's the simple ambiance that sets the scene for the simple goodness that is to come.

The menu is short and sweet.  They serve both breakfast and lunch items.  Breakfast, they serve all day.  Perfect for us late risers!!!  And that's what you'll see most of the patrons ordering.  Every now and then, you'll see a sandwich sneak out the kitchen.  I saw a beautiful, fresh grilled chicken salad delivered a table on my last visit.

Grilled Chicken Salad
Now, every time I make my trek over to Demitris, I order the same thing.  Tracy can quote it - Fish (fried tilapia) and Grits with Eggs Scrambled w/ Cheese and a side of Raisin Toast.  And, generally, within 10 minutes, I have a piping hot breakfast on my table.  This is early morning soul food at its' finest!!!  You weight watchers and calorie counters might wanna steer clear.  They actually use seasoning and butter here unlike a lot of other restaurants.  Just writing this post is making me wanna gas up the car and ride out.  This is some real quality food.  And, the prices are more than reasonable.  The most expensive thing on the menu might be $10

The Nick Love Special - Tilapia, Grits, Eggs Scrambled w/ Cheese + Raisin Toast
Now, I'll be honest.  Until Block told me about this place, I was never really a small diner type of guy.  So, I understand why some of you may ride past a place like this and never even consider stopping.  However, a place like THIS is why ATL Bite Life was created.  There are plenty of spots like this around Metro Atlanta that serve some great food.  Demitris is special.  It's everything that Atlanta used to be BEFORE we became the hip, busy, city-fied ATL. The southern charm is unmistakable.  Even the customers say "please", "thank you", "yes sir", and "yes ma'am".  Where do they STILL do that at??  Love it!!!

So, if you're ever in the area, hit me up on Twitter.  I'll meet you over there.  I'm ALWAYS down to grab a bite to eat at Demitris!!!  Tell Tracy and Dias that you heard about them on ATL Bite Life.

Happy Eating!!!

Yeah, you gotta go early cuz I'm pretty sure they close around 2 or 3pm. If you work during the week, go on a Saturday. As of New Years, they're now open on Sundays too. Enjoy!!!
