Foodie News x Restaurant Reviews x Hip-Hop Attitude

In 2010, I (Nick Love) spent over 45% of my annual income eating out at some of Atlanta's best (and worst) restaurants. So, who better to guide you through the city's crowded dining terrain?? Now, I, along with my team of Hip-Hop generation foodies, will expose and review ATL's newest hits, hidden gems, and old favorites. Hopefully, this blog will earn us a free meal or two while we point you guys in the direction of some good food and steer you away from the wackness. Let's eat!!!

Review: RED PEPPER TAQUERIA | Lots of Taq, Okay Walk

Name: Red Pepper Taqueria
Cuisine: Mexican
Neighborhood: Emory
Address: 2149 Briarcliff Rd. Atlanta, GA 30329
Phone: 404.325.8151
At Nick Love's insistence, I popped into Red Pepper Taqueria to grab a quick bite for lunch and see what this place was all about.  I’ll go ahead and tell you guys now.  This place is definitely more than just a taco spot.  Upon walking in, I could instantly tell that a lot of thought and preparation went into this concept.  From the colorful mural on the wall, to the numerous flat screen televisions throughout the building, to the Luchador (Mexican wrestler for the Spanish-impaired) head sitting the bar, to the tables equipped with their own draft beer system, this place just screams FIESTA!!!

Draft beer system at table
The brain power wasn't totally drained on the decor.  There was also plenty of food and tequila.  Red Pepper's menu consists of local, organic, all natural food.  Everything is ordered and prepared fresh everyday.  So fresh in fact that they don't even have freezers in the building.  That's always a good sign.  But, was the food good??

Well, it depends on who you ask.  Or maybe just what you order.  I took a few guests with me and the food seemed to be received with mixed results.

Jalapeno queso dip + chips
Once everyone devoured the jalapeno queso dip (everyone agreed that this was good), we placed our orders. I had the Fajita Skillet Trio with chicken, steak, & shrimp; all of which were cooked perfectly and seasoned very well.  One friend ordered the Nachos Ole’ with shrimp which she definitely enjoyed.  The organic-ness of the meal could definitely be detected.  Yet, it was appreciated.

The Fajita Skillet Trio w/ chicken, steak, and shrimp

Nachos Ole' w/ shrimp
Everyone else ordered some variations of the tacos and quesadillas which seemed to fall flat with the group.  According to them, it wasn't that anything was particularly bad but they'd definitely had better at places like Taqueria del Sol or Cinco.  Oddly enough, the black beans got rave reviews.

The "El Duo" w/ Chicken + Fish tacos

Fajita quesadilla
The drinks also received kudos.  Red Pepper offers over 100 different tequilas and 98% of the margaritas are handcrafted.  It really doesn’t get much better than that!!!  I ordered The Skinny, one of their most popular margaritas, made with fresh lime juice, Agave nectar, & Herradura Blanco. It was strong but refreshing so it worked perfectly for me.  My friend had the frozen mango margarita and she liked it.  It had to be sent back once because it tasted like straight mango syrup at the bottom of the glass.  But, the second time was the charm.

TEQUILA!!!
Overall though, I definitely think Red Pepper Taqueria is worth checking out.  There were a few hiccups in the road but the food and drinks are pretty good and the atmosphere is amazing. I’m sure you guys will love it.  The only true downside is the traffic that can sporadically pop up in that area.  Being located at a busy intersection and near a college (Emory) comes with several advantages and disadvantages.  But, hey, what can you do??

Top 10 Places To Cinco Your De Mayo in Atlanta

Ok, folks.  Cinco de Mayo is TOMORROW!!!  And, if you know like I know, you're aware that every NON-Mexican person in the ATL will be turnt up off of tequila and tacos from say noon til about 3 in the morning.  Smh.  I'm not exactly sure how this became National Drinking Day in the USA but it is what it is and there's no turning back now.  So, where will YOU be Cinco-ing your De Mayo??  If you're still undecided, ATL Bite Life is giving you our Top 10 Places in the A to get some "drank in your cup" (Kirko Bangz voice) and some tortillas in your belly on May 5th.

One of my interns actually put me on to this spot a couple months ago.  The place is pretty much brand new and it sits right in the Emory University area.  Thanks to the kindness of one of the bar managers, I had the opportunity to sample a few of their tequilas.  This is why I don't have any pics of the place that aren't fuzzy.  Lol.  Tomorrow, they are doing $2 Jimador Shots, $3 Tecate, and $10 26 oz. Veev Margaritas.  WOW!!!

Love this place!!!  I've only been to one of the locations (Akers Mill by Cumberland Mall) but the rooftop patio alone at this location is reason enough to get your Cinco on.  If you go, get the Nachos Grande and some jalapeno queso dip.

This is one of my favorite spots in the city.  Yes, it's in Midtown which, for reasons I won't mention, can make some of my less tolerant non-Midtowners slightly uncomfortable.  But, the food is really good (try the bang bang shrimp taco) and the drinks are very strong.

I'm not exactly sure what a Hacienda is but I do know that I really use to like this place when I was going thru my "Castleberry/Peters St is the greatest thing in Atlanta" phase.  But, I've gotta admit that after I started to venture out and try other Mexican spots around the city, I fell out of love with No Mas pretty fast.  In my opinion, it's a little too pricey for what it is and how it tastes.  *shrug*  However, I hear that their Cinco de Mayo celebration is off the chain!

Once again, I've only been to one of their locations (the one in downtown Woodstock) but the rooftop patio is just as fly as the one at Cinco.  The food was a little "ehh" but the drinks weren't bad at all.  If you're looking for a spot to just pour some Patron down your gullet without a whole lot of food to absorb some of that alcohol, this might be a good choice.

I've driven past the Peachtree St location a million times over the years but my very first time going in was like a couple of months ago for a meeting with Young Jeezy (who claims he's a foodie).  It wasn't bad.  I played it safe with the chicken quesadilla and a couple of tacos.  No complaints.  That Texas margarita I washed it down with wasn't bad either.  The selling point for Cinco de Mayo though - the front patio faces Peachtree St.  #Win

Ahh, the memories I have of La Parilla.  I was actually arrested in the parking lot of the Howell Mill location one time on my way to my beautiful PR friend Tamiko Hope's birthday party.  Smh.  She's actually the one who put me on to this place.  But, don't let that little tidbit deter you from the goodness of La Parilla.  Quality food and great drinks is what they serve here.  While you're there, you MUST try the Marga-Rona/Corona-Rita.  INCREDIBLE!!!  Basically 2 drinks in one.  Margaritas and Corona at the same damn time (Future voice)!!!  In years past, the crowd at La Parilla on Howell Mill has been borderline legendary.  So, if you're gonna go, you may wanna get there early and post up.

This place seems to be the default spot for Mexican food lovers in Atlanta.  Every Cinco de Mayo story I've ever heard from my white foodie friends begins with "This one time, I was at Tin Lizzy's. . . ".  Very American Pie-ish.  Lol.  From listening to the radio this morning, it sounds like Q100 (or maybe just The Bert Show) is doing something for Cinco de Mayo at the Buckhead location.  If I heard correctly, there's a 5K run attached to the event too.  If you go, let us know how it goes.

Our love for Taqueria del Sol is pretty well documented.  Their food is the standard by which we hold all other "Taquerias".  We've never done Cinco de Mayo here but I hear it's a jolly good time once that sun starts beaming and that covered patio gets full of margarita drinkers.  Make sure you grab a couple of fried chicken tacos while you're there.  Also, once you're nice and drunk, try not to throw those oranges on the big square table at anyone.  I've heard that that is frowned upon.  Lol

I can not tell a lie.  I'm not a fan of Loca Luna at all.  The food is beyond mediocre to me.  However, to not tell you that this place is gonna be a ZOO on Saturday would be doing my readers a disservice.  Loca Luna will probably be the most packed place in the city come 3pm.  So, if you like big crowds and long lines, this is the place for you.  But, if you want good food and good drinks, there are 9 other suggestions above.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

The Great Debate: Tacos

With what seems like THOUSANDS of Mexican spots to choose from, Atlanta has become a mini-haven for restaurants called Taco this or Taqueria that.  They're EVERYWHERE!!!

It's no secret that I'm partial to Taqueria del Sol.  But, I also like Prickly Pear on West Peachtree.  Several of my friends eat at Tin Lizzys on a regular basis.  And, I was just invited to Bell Street Burritos just yesterday by my new friend Ollie.  Oh, and let's not forget about the bigger more commercial spots like Moes and our girl Sheneka Adams' favorite - Chipotle.

So, today's question is simple - Who has the best tacos in the ATL??

Can't wait to hear your answers.

Review: OMG TACO | Soy Oh Boy!!!

Name: OMG Taco
Cuisine: Korean Mexican
Neighborhood: Little 5 Points
Address: 1126 Euclid Ave. Atlanta, GA 30007
Phone: (404) 343-3935

For months, whenever I rode thru L5P on my way to Stir It Up, I would pass this little brown building on the right hand side that read "OMG Taco".  I can't put my finger on it but it was just something about it that repeatedly piqued my curiosity on every drive by.  I think it was the fact that they used the ever popular texting phrase "OMG".  That word conjured images in my head that the restaurant was run by some 16-year old girls that would force you to text your order in on your iPhone.  Lol.  Whatever it was, I just remember thinking, "I gotta try that place whenever it opens".  Well, it opened.  And, about 2 weeks ago, I made my way on in to see what this place was all about.

Upon walking in the door, my first impression was that OMG Taco was everything and nothing I expected.   The funky colors and the graffiti on the walls were kinda foreshadowed by the sign outside.  I pretty much expected that carryover.  But, the contemporary, chrome stools all pushed against the wall and the glow in the dark bar light show was a bit of a shocker.  It was like a rave party with a touch of feng shui.  Interesting to say the least.

(Nick the bartender mixing it up)

(Sangria, the beverage of champions)

Then, I encountered Nick.  Not only does he have the greatest name ever, he also happened to be probably the coolest, friendliest bartender I've ever met in life.  Not sure what he's getting paid over there but he deserves a raise.  He's the perfect ambassador for this particular restaurant!!!  While making this signature (very fruity) Sangria that was on display at the bar, Nick told me all about how long the restaurant had been open (3 months), what menu items he highly recommended (the chicken, fish, and short rib tacos), and the fact that OMG was NOT in fact owned by teenage girls but was developed by a couple of guys in their early twenties who began with a food truck and had decided to branch out into the full brick-and-mortar concept.  Not bad!!!

He also informed me that OMG Taco served KOREAN-infused Mexican food.  I'd heard of this strange blend before but I'd never had the pleasure of tasting it.  As usual, I was kinda skeptical.  But, Nick's attitude, the ambiance, and the fact that I was in Little 5 Points (home of everything experimental), were all the ingredients I needed for an adventurous day.  So, I went for it.

(2 chicken tacos, 1 fish taco, and 1 short rib taco)

At Nick's suggestion, I ordered 2 chicken tacos, 1 fish taco, and 1 short rib taco.  I also got an order of the OMG Super fries (french fries covered with OMG slaw, OMG sauce, Monterey Jack cheese, Cheddar cheese, your choice of meat, and Caramelized Kimchee). The food comes, I bite in, and then. . . . a confused look comes to my face.  What's this slightly delightful yet very different taste in my mouth??  SOY!!!  It threw me off for a minute until I was able to comprehend all the taste sensations going on in my mouth at one time.  There was meat, soy sauce, cheese, a soft tortilla, tartar sauce, lettuce, and whatever else was in there.  It was odd but not in a bad way.  Actually, it was pretty darn good.  One of those "acquired taste" that you could easily and quickly acquire.  I was really digging it.

(OMG Super Fries)

After polishing off those tacos, I dove head first into the Super Fries.  This was great!!!  It was everything that the tacos were with some crispy french fries at the bottom.  Definitely not for you calorie-counters out there.  Oddly enough, the fries seem to soften the blow of the soy/sesame taste that seemed to shine through in each item.  It was flavorful and filling.  Without being sweet, it had an almost dessert-sh quality to it (if that makes any sense).  Kind of a Korean/Mexican comfort food.  Delicious!!!

(Nick's signature Blue Thunder drink)

Finally, just for good measure (since it was a Friday afternoon), I got one last drink to wash it all down.  Nick told me he had a signature drink in his stash called Blue Thunder that I just had to try.  Why not??  I'm not gonna lie.  I can't even remember what it tasted like.  But, I do remember that it was really good!!!  Even better than the Sangria.  You gotta get dude to make it for you.  #Winning

At the end of the day, I was definitely pleased.  I'm sure I'll find myself back at OMG Taco sooner than later.  It was a great change of pace outing and it's always great to find gems like this in the city to keep that culinary diversity alive.  Next time you find yourself sitting in that hideous 5:00 Atlanta traffic near I-20 and the 75/85 merge, pull into OMG and kill some time.  You might even run into your boy up there.

Review: TAQUERIA DEL SOL | Heaven In A Soft Shell

Name: Taqueria Del Sol
Cuisine: Mexican w/ American Infusion
Neighborhood: West Midtown
Address: 1200-B Howell Mill Rd. Atlanta, GA 30318
Phone: (404) 352-5811
Website: http://taqueriadelsol.com
Menu: http://taqueriadelsol.com/menus.html

All praises due to my friend and business partner, Tory "Grim" Edwards for putting me on to this magnificent place back in April of this year!!!  If you've never been here, you are truly missing out on something special.  The food is great, the place always seems sunny and bright (due to the many windows and the white paint on the walls), and the service is extremely prompt and courteous.  I mean, what else could you ask for??

As you see in the picture above, there's a line hanging outside the door.  That line is pretty much there anytime you go.  Don't let it frighten you.  Yes, the restaurant is busy.  But, there's not much room for a line on the inside so they have to push it out the door.  It may not be as bad as you think.  However, here comes plus number 1 - MARGARITAS.  While you're waiting in line, they allow you to walk inside and order a drink from the bar (I recommend the frozen margarita) and take it back outside while you wait.  Beat that!!!  Also, don't forget to grab a menu while you're waiting.  Remember, the line is long so you don't wanna play the folks behind you.

As you peruse the menu, you'll notice that it is not littered with a million items.  While some may argue that this displays a lack of variety, you'll appreciate it later when your food shows up hot and fresh almost less than five minutes later.  Like many Mexican restaurants, Taqueria Del Sol will bring you some tortilla chips and salsa to your table.  However, I ALWAYS order the Salsa Trio and some Queso Dip to go with my chips.  Their queso is amazing!!!  And, it comes out piping hot!!!

Now, after ordering, depending on how busy it is, there is the potential for an adventure. It's kinda frowned upon to sit down before you've ordered so you may find yourself racing to beat someone to a table a la Musical Chairs.  Or, you could be waiting briefly until someone gets up.  It's never too bad.  It seems like someone is always coming in and going out here like a mini food factory or something.  You'll be fine.

Now, while I've tried a respectable portion of the menu, there's nothing better than their specialty - TACOS.  I usually order 2 fried chicken tacos and one fish taco.  Feel free to order the beef brisket taco if you like.  It's not one of my favorites but to each his own.  They keep the tacos pretty simple.  Some tartar sauce here, some jalapenos there, a little lettuce and tomato and VOILA, Magic (Future voice)!!!  When you bite into them, you'll instantly notice the non-Taco Bell, non-Moe's-ish quality about the tacos.  There aren't hundreds of flavors and textures bursting in your mouth all at once.  It's even, consistent, and delicious throughout.  The chicken and the fish are seasoned very well and the sauce and peppers compliment them well.  And, if you're really feeling good, dip your taco in the queso dip!!!  Oh boy (Jazze Pha voice)!!
The only bad thing I can say about Taqueria Del Sol is that is closes in the middle of the afternoon to prepare their dinner menu.  Very often, I've driven all the way to Howell Mill from the eastside (Decatur where it's greater) and the place was frickin' closed!!!  *insert BBM angry face*  Other than that, I love this place!!!  I think you will too.

Stop by and let me know that you think.

Happy Eating!!!

What's the Next Atlanta Food Trend??

Over the last 5 years, a number of food trends have cycled thru this great city.  We saw burger joints (Flip Burger Boutique, Yeah! Burger, Grind House Killer Burgers) spring up out of nowhere.  Then, pizza became the flavor of the year (Antico Pizza, Varasano's Pizzeria, Max's Coal Oven Pizzeria).  Cupcakes had a run (CamiCakes, Gigi's Cupcakes, Atlanta Cupcake Factory).  Now, food trucks are all the rave (The Fry Guy, Yumbii, Tex's Tacos).  I won't even start on all the taco spots.  Excuse me, I meant "taquerias".

So, going into 2012, what's gonna be the new thing in ATL food??  My personal thoughts - it won't be food at all.  The new trend is gonna be. . . DRINKS!!!

With the emergence of products like Isaac's Lemonades (fresh fruit drinks w/ liquor in them) and more specialty drinks that include ice cream and other signature liqueurs, I think you'll start to see more of a cache attached to "going out for drinks".  Pretty soon, we'll be asking "who are you drinking??" much in the same manner as we do celebrities on the red carpet.

I wonder if I can get a drink named after me. . .
