Foodie News x Restaurant Reviews x Hip-Hop Attitude

Now, I, along with my team of Hip-Hop generation foodies, will expose and review ATL's newest hits, hidden gems, and old favorites. Hopefully, this blog will earn us a free meal or two while we point you guys in the direction of some good food and steer you away from the wackness. Let's eat!!!

THIS SUNDAY: April Fools Day Restaurant Swap

Have you guys heard about the April Fools Day Restaurant Swap at Double Zero Napoletana and The Iberian Pig?  It’s a really dope concept!  Chefs, sous chefs, mixologists, managers, & servers from each restaurant will all swap out and take over the other restaurant for one night.  This basically means that you can enjoy featured entrees in addition to some regular menu items from each restaurant, minus the journey around 285.  So, for those of you that refuse to travel more than 5 miles away from your home to dine, this might be perfect.

To avoid extended waiting periods, reservations should be made BEFORE Sunday, April 1st at the respective restaurant you choose to attend.  Contact Double Zero at 404.991.3666 or The Iberian Pig at 404.371.8800.

If you decide to attend, leave a comment and let us know how it went.

Until next time…Happy Eating!

Castleberry Gets a New "SPIN" on Pizza

It's pretty well known that some of you Peters St/Castleberry neighborhood regulars are still feeling some kinda way about the closing of Slice aka Black Hollywood's favorite pizza joint.  And, even with it being reborn on Huff Rd as Westside Pie, that void is somehow still there.  But, instead of telling you guys to get over it already, I’m delighted to share the news about the opening of Spin.

According to our friends over at Thrillist, the space that once housed Slice has been taken over by its' former neighbors at 255 and transformed into what they're calling a "neoclassical pizzeria".  Basically, Spin is going to be a more sophisticated, upscale version of its' predecessor complete with a mural of our city’s skyline and an atmosphere filled with warm shades of brown.  From the looks of the pic being released, it screams grown and sexy.

The new contemporary interior of Spin
These guys have thought of every topping anybody could ever want on a pizza.  Options like chicken sausage, goat cheese, and turkey bacon are being offered along with just about any veggie you can think of.  There will also be specialty pies like BBQ jerk chicken.  And, if for some reason you stroll into this pizza haven and DON'T want pizza (smh), they also have sub sandwiches like chicken pesto or meatball subs.  Everyone's a winner!

And let's not leave out the fact that one of our newest comrades, the beer guru himself - Ale Sharpton - was brought in to personally select the beer options available at Spin.  So, you know they’re gonna have the best of the best.  We can't wait to try it out!!!

Contact 255 Tapas Lounge for more info on the opening of Spin.  From what we hear, it looks like it may be next Wednesday or Thursday (March 28 or 29).  Whatever day it is, we'll probably be there.  So, you'll hear about it on our tweets or see some pics on our Facebook

Until next time, Happy Eating!

Tell Your Kids to Sit Down and Shut Up!!! Grant Central Pizza Makes National News With Parent Policy

We've all been there.  You're sitting down for a bite to eat at one of your favorite restaurants and in the booth behind you is a family with a few, shall we say, "active" children in tow.  They're crying, they're screaming, they're running around.  One of them is grabbing your shirt or playing with your hair.  One of the cuter ones has actually made his/her way over to YOUR table and either stolen your silverware or knocked over your drink.  It's infuriating!!!  But, you can only be so mad at the kids.  It's the PARENTS who you REALLY wanna take a swing at, right??

Well, apparently, there's been some issues over the years at Grant Central Pizza and Pasta (451 Cherokee Ave. Atlanta, GA 30312) in East Atlanta with "active" kids and they made national news over the last few days with their solution.  With regards to crying babies, GCP offered this statement on Facebook
Dear all present and future patrons: GCP is proud of its reputation as a family restaurant, a title that we will work to keep.  However, a number of our diners have posted unpleasant experiences because of crying and unsupervised children.  To ensure that all diners have an enjoyable lunch or dinner with us, we respectfully ask that parents tend to their crying tots outside
Now, personally, I didn't see anything wrong with this.  I actually think they've gone a little further and said some things that might have REALLY offended some of their customers.  Lol.  However, I realize that pissing off your customers can be bad for business.  But, on the flip side, I have 2 daughters (Kaya - 9, Kendall - 6) and I remember being extra mindful when I was out with them when they were younger and we were out to eat.  Mainly because I didn't want to reinforce the image of the "careless black family with the loud ghetto kids".  Might sound funny but honestly, that's REALLY what it was.  And, we ALL know the stereotype of the white parents who let their kids get away with murder at pretty much any public place.  We joke about it but we all know that, at its' core, its VERY annoying and unnerving.  I just think parents need to be parents at the end of the day.  Sadly, it sometimes takes a rule or policy to force people to make the necessary adjustments.

So, my question to you guys is simple - Do you think Grant Central Pizza is right or justified in issuing this statement to their patrons??  If so, why??  If not, why??  Leave your comments below!

I might go over there today and buy a pizza just to support them.

Happy  Eating!

Review: WESTSIDE PIE | The Slice Is Right

Name: Westside Pie
Cuisine: Pizza, Salad, Sandwiches
Neighborhood: West Midtwon
Address: 1133 Huff Rd NW Atlanta, GA 30318
Phone: (404) 367-8410
Website: http://www.westsidepie.com/

If you're anything like me (and I realize that you're probably not), you thought that the original Slice Atlanta in the Castleberry District was the greatest restaurant EVER!!!  Not because it was some super plushed out, five star restaurant.  But because it was the perfect hybrid of poor man's pub meets Atlanta's Black Hollywood.  $2 slices of pizza with $12 drinks - absolutely BRILLIANT!!!  This is the kind of restaurant I 'd always wanted to open myself.  But, sadly, in the Fall of 2011, Slice closed its doors.   Fear not though.  Just like 80's streetwear, 90's cartoons, and Tupac (according to Rick Ross) in 2011 , Slice is back; reborn as Westside Pie.

Slice of Pepperoni Pizza
Tucked on the bottom level of one of the newer living developments on Huff Rd, Westside Pie is serving up those same large, New York style slices that made the original Slice popular.  The grilled chicken Caesar salad got an upgrade so now it's all the way on point.  And, the drinks have always been pretty stiff.  Like I said, it's everything that we've grown to love, just a new address.

But, it's the new address that's keeping me from loving it all the way.  It's not that it's a bad location.  In fact, this new West Midtown locale is more spacious and way sexier than Peters Street ever was.  However, it's missing that urban "charm" that, to me, gave Slice its' personality.  I miss the homeless guys who used to try to help you park your car.  I miss the cracked sidewalk and weathered, brick loft spaces that surrounded the building.  I miss the relatively small, narrow interior on those hot, uncomfortable nights where the place was clearly past fire capacity but the party was rocking.  *sigh* Memories.

But, don't let my strange infatuation with the hood keep you away.  Westside Pie is definitely more comfortable and inviting now.  During the day, the lighter colored decor creates a more lively ambiance that's perfect having lunch or a more casual business meeting.  In the evening, the blue lighting really illuminates the place giving it a sexier, night club feel.  Throw in a strong cocktail or two and a couple of pepperoni slices and you're on your way to a night you'll never forget (or can't remember).

Oh, and let's not forget about the ping pong table in the back or the chalkboard walls in the bathrooms.  I mean, those two things alone are worth the trip.  Trust me.  I've actually stopped by specifically to use both a couple of times.  Smh. #confession.

So, the next time you're riding down Howell Mill and your stomach starts growling for something quick and delicious, the answer is NEVER burgers, tacos, or chicken from one of the nearby fast food restaurants.  Do what we do.  Turn on to Huff Rd, park your car (on the street if you can), scoot your stool close to the bar and tell your server that you need a slice of something and a sip of something.  Also make sure that you mention that you heard about them on ATLBiteLife.com.

Happy Eating!!!

The holidays were kind to me.  More specifically, the holidays were kind to my stomach.  Lol.  While taking the month of December off to just relax, regroup, and revamp ATLBiteLife.com, I pretty much enjoyed 30 days of unbridled, no holds barred eating.  I drove all over the East and North sides of the city checking out all the new spots I hadn't tried yet and catching back up on some of my old favorites.  But, by far and away, two restaurants in particular set the stage for the BEST DINING EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE.  One of them was Double Zero Napoletana.

Now, in all fairness to the other spots I visited, I have to denote that I did visit Double Zero about an hour and a half before close on Christmas Eve.  So, maybe I caught the staff at the height of their holiday spirit.  That would explain why  EVERYONE from the valet guy to the owner was over-the-top friendly and went out of their way to make sure that I would become a regular customer.

Main Dining Area 1
As I mentioned, I pulled into Double Zero a little after 9pm and I self-parked my car toward the front of the lot.  30 seconds later, I realized that I probably wasn't supposed to do this.  As I walked toward the main entrance, the valet guy greeted me with a smile and a "you know you know better" look.  My bad.  I didn't see him before I parked nor did I see any cones or signs telling me valet was available.  He was cool though.  He even opened the door for me to enter the restaurant.

Main Dining Area 2
Upon entering, I was instantly impressed. The dining room was spacious and beautiful (in a cool, masculine way of course).  There's a private cafe to your left, a full bar on the opposite side, and the dining room showcases an array of autumn colors on a classic Italian backdrop.  The wooden tables, comfortable chairs,  and designer pillows in the booths set in that dim lighting created a romantic ambiance ideal for date night.

Then, there was the food.  After perusing the menu for a few minutes, I noticed one major thing - NONE of the pizzas had PEPPERONI.  I know, to some, this may seem like a very base observation but I thought I was coming to a PIZZA restaurant.  Instead, what I got was an Italian experience.  My waiter, David, not only explained the menu but also gave me a history lesson on all the things that made Double Zero unique including the name "Double Zero" which refers to the finely ground flour used to make Neapolitan pizza. Unfortunately, because I walked in under the naive premise that I was just gonna grab a pizza and maybe a salad, I wasn't prepared to try some of the more appealing (and expensive) dishes that I saw.  So, I played it safe -  I ordered a Mozzarella Al Forno and a pizza called The American.

Mozzarella Al Forno
The Mozzarella Al Forno(a tasty combination of mozzarella cheese and pomedora sauce) came out in a bowl accompanied by a few pieces of soft warm bread .  Delicious!!!  It was much heartier than I anticipated but it also had a lighter, sweeter flavor that I couldn't quite place. The freshness of the ingredients gave it a smooth taste that totally reinforced the authenticity of this restaurant's Italian roots.

The American Pizza
The pizza was next.  According to David, they named this pie "The American" because it was the only pizza that had ingredients that didn't fit the rest of the menu.  Unfortunately, The American STILL didn't have pepperoni (I know, I know).  I forgive them though.  This was actually really good.  While explaining the menu, he mentioned that it was so thin (due to that "double zero" flour) that you could cut it with scissors.  I didn't know they would bring out ACTUAL SCISSORS!!!  This was unbelievable and cool at the same time.  I sliced right on through that crust and went to town!!!  Just like the Mozzarella Al Forno, you could taste the freshness oozing thru every bite.  It also had a similar combination of hearty taste and light texture.  It wasn't a big portion so I wouldn't describe it as "filling" but it was extremely tasty nonetheless.

Halcyom
The biggest and best surprise of the night was the absolute 5 star service I got while eating.  Not only was David an incredible waiter and tour guide (he walked me thru the restaurant describing every facet in great detail), I also had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Castellucci (the father of the owners).  Mr Castellucci was the one who really got me swept away in the deep Italian origins of my surroundings.  The stories he told with that old world accent and the way he carried himself gave him a very Godfather-esque quality.  At the conclusion of his story, he introduced me to Chris (the bar manager).  Chris topped my night ALL THE WAY OFF by bringing a complimentary cocktail called Halcyom to my table.  This thing was INCREDIBLE!!!  I don't remember all of what was in it but I remember it had beer, pumpkin spice, and another type of alcohol.  Definitely a strong candidate to make my "Best I Ever Had" list.

All and all, the food, the service, the drink. . . . in a word - WOW!!!

There are a couple of things to beware of though.  First, Double Zero could be considered slightly pricey for anyone who was just looking to grab a large pie.  Remember, this place definitely leans more towards fine dining than casual fare (as opposed to Antico's somewhat similar concept) .  And, because of how their dough is prepared, Double Zero is VERY strict about how they will and will NOT serve their pizza.  There is actually a disclaimer on their website menu that reads -
"we DO NOT server our pizzas to-go, cut into slices, or with unlimited toppings.  You may, however, eliminate toppings just not substitute."
This is definitely not Pizza Hut.  Finally, if you are looking for a hearty meal, you may want to veer towards their pastas or their main entrees.  As I mentioned earlier, the pizzas are thin and they're only about 12 inches.  You could easily devour a whole one in one setting.  To me, they're more appetizer-ish than main course.

Even still, in spite of the smaller pizzas not quenching my larger appetite, I will definitely be back.  The atmosphere is so fly and there are so many things on the menu that I wanna try.  If they can continue match the service that I got on this trip, they will have a fan for life.

So, when are you going to make your reservation??

Happy Eating and Happy New Year!!!

Review: ANTICO | Pizza Pizza

Name: Antico Pizza Napoletana
Cuisine: Pizza / Italian
Neighborhood: Midtown
Address: 1093 Hemphill Ave NW Atlanta, GA 30318
Phone Number: (404) 724-2333

I was first introduced to this spot by my friend Frances (@franceslove) after a meeting at Atlanta's premiere recording studio, Patchwerk.  She led me directly across the street to this non-descript building that I'd always wondered about but was never quite sure what it was.  I didn't know if it was a school or an office but I was pretty sure it wasn't a restaurant.  Boy, was I wrong. I found myself sitting down in what is essentially the kitchen (pic below) of this spot and drifting off into my own little imaginary episode of the Sopranos.

Now, this eating in the kitchen thing was totally new to me.  In my many many food outings, I would venture to say that 99.9% of the restaurants I'd eaten at offered some kind of separate dining room experience.  You may be able to HEAR the staff in the back cheffin' it up but you rarely SAW them.  Not here!!!  Here, you sit within 30 feet of three (3) 1000+ degree flaming ovens.  You're able to witness first hand the half dozen or so cooks on staff flip dough, stir sauce, chop veggies, and stuff your made to order pizza directly into the fire.

Once your pie is done, they bring it to your table on a long rectangular baking pan similar to what you would bake cookies on.  The first thing you'll notice is that your pizza is PIPING HOT!!!  The second thing you'll notice is that this is NOT your run of the mill take out pizza.  The cheese is noticeably fresh, the meat toppings are chunkier than normal, and the vegetables stand out like they're on display.  The edges of the crust are slightly charred from the furnace it was cooked in but you don't notice it much in the taste. The owner, Giovanni (a super nice guy who you can tell is from the old world), told me that this is what I should expect from an authentic Neapolitan pizza.

The taste did take some getting used to.  It wasn't because the food was bad in any way.  But, when your taste buds have been conditioned for 30 years to think that Dominos is the way pizza should taste, this contrast is kinda shocking.  Plus, this wasn't my usual pepperoni and mushroom order.  Actually, I think I insulted Giovanni by ordering a standard pepperoni pizza at first.  He gave me a sorta menacing scowl that said "order something else". In the end, I was forced encouraged to get one of his "special" concoctions (a variation of the margherita pizza).  VERY GOOD!!!

There are some downsides to Antico though.  First, the prices.  The average ticket is about $20 per pie.  While I definitely understand paying for quality (and this pizza IS quality), we're in a recession era where the major pizza chains like Papa Johns and Pizza Hut are selling multi-topping pizzas for $10 or less.  Those places offer some specials that would allow you to get 2 or 3 specialty pizzas for the same price as ONE from Antico.  Second, the parking.  This place is usually jam packed due to it's Midtown location and its' proximity to Georgia Tech.  Their main lot in front of the restaurant only holds about 6 cars which leaves on-street parking (which can always get tricky downtown).  They have added a fenced in lot adjacent to their building but once again, THIS PLACE GETS PACKED!!!  Sometimes, even that is not enough to hold the crowd.

Overall, I'd still recommend this spot to anyone looking for a quality taste of Italy and a cool change of pace in your dining experience.

What's the Next Atlanta Food Trend??

Over the last 5 years, a number of food trends have cycled thru this great city.  We saw burger joints (Flip Burger Boutique, Yeah! Burger, Grind House Killer Burgers) spring up out of nowhere.  Then, pizza became the flavor of the year (Antico Pizza, Varasano's Pizzeria, Max's Coal Oven Pizzeria).  Cupcakes had a run (CamiCakes, Gigi's Cupcakes, Atlanta Cupcake Factory).  Now, food trucks are all the rave (The Fry Guy, Yumbii, Tex's Tacos).  I won't even start on all the taco spots.  Excuse me, I meant "taquerias".

So, going into 2012, what's gonna be the new thing in ATL food??  My personal thoughts - it won't be food at all.  The new trend is gonna be. . . DRINKS!!!

With the emergence of products like Isaac's Lemonades (fresh fruit drinks w/ liquor in them) and more specialty drinks that include ice cream and other signature liqueurs, I think you'll start to see more of a cache attached to "going out for drinks".  Pretty soon, we'll be asking "who are you drinking??" much in the same manner as we do celebrities on the red carpet.

I wonder if I can get a drink named after me. . .
