Foodie News x Restaurant Reviews x Hip-Hop Attitude

In 2010, I (Nick Love) spent over 45% of my annual income eating out at some of Atlanta's best (and worst) restaurants. So, who better to guide you through the city's crowded dining terrain?? Now, I, along with my team of Hip-Hop generation foodies, will expose and review ATL's newest hits, hidden gems, and old favorites. Hopefully, this blog will earn us a free meal or two while we point you guys in the direction of some good food and steer you away from the wackness. Let's eat!!!

You Gotta Try: SWEET AUBURN BAKERY

Name: Sweet Auburn Bakery
Cuisine: Bakery, Dessert
Neighborhood: Downtown
Address: 209 Edgewood Ave SE Atlanta, GA 30303
Phone: (678) 927-9401

It was quite a while ago when my sister, Rasheeda, first put me on to Sweet Auburn Bakery.  At that time, I didn't know their name nor their location in the Market.  I also had no idea about the countless hours of preparation and effort put forth by the friendly staff nor the various menu items offered daily at SAB.  But, I definitely knew of their delicious Sweet Potato Cheesecake (which I feel everyone should try before they die).

Recently, I made a special trip on over to Edgewood Avenue and stuck my head in to SAB and it instantly reminded me why I need to share this secret with the world.

Mark Bishop (SAB's chief Pastry Chef) has been in the game for over a decade.  He's the brainchild behind the sweet treats you and I get to enjoy.  Old classics on the menu like Chocolate Chip Cookies, Red Velvet Cupcakes, and Banana Nut Bread will cure anyone’s nostalgic cravings for childhood favorites.  However, if your palate is slightly more sophisticated, they offer treats like the Almond Horn (a soft almond cookie filled with almond paste & topped with toasted almonds) or, my favorite, the Magic Cookie Bar (pecan pie filling, chocolate chips, and coconut on a shortbread base).  I know it sounds overwhelming but it works…trust me.

Don’t think SAB is only good for dessert though.  manager Julie Coleman gave me the run down on all the goodies they offer.  They have an assortment of breakfast items ranging from muffins and Danishes to coffee cakes and tea breads.  Or, if your eyes happen to be bigger than your stomach like me, I’m sure you would opt for their gigantic doughnut glazed with chocolate ganache.

Oh, and let’s not forget about the pies. SAB’s most popular pie, and bestseller throughout the year, is the Sweet Potato Pie, which is offered either small or large.  They also offer their Pecan Pie by the slice and whole for the holidays.

So, the next time you're downtown, I highly recommend that you stop by Sweet Auburn Bakery.  I promise you won’t be disappointed.  The service is exceptional and the treats are delicious!!!  Special thanks to Julie and Mark for all their help and information.  And, also for the box of goodies!!!  : )

Happy Eating!!!
