Foodie News x Restaurant Reviews x Hip-Hop Attitude

In 2010, I (Nick Love) spent over 45% of my annual income eating out at some of Atlanta's best (and worst) restaurants. So, who better to guide you through the city's crowded dining terrain?? Now, I, along with my team of Hip-Hop generation foodies, will expose and review ATL's newest hits, hidden gems, and old favorites. Hopefully, this blog will earn us a free meal or two while we point you guys in the direction of some good food and steer you away from the wackness. Let's eat!!!

Tell Your Kids to Sit Down and Shut Up!!! Grant Central Pizza Makes National News With Parent Policy

We've all been there.  You're sitting down for a bite to eat at one of your favorite restaurants and in the booth behind you is a family with a few, shall we say, "active" children in tow.  They're crying, they're screaming, they're running around.  One of them is grabbing your shirt or playing with your hair.  One of the cuter ones has actually made his/her way over to YOUR table and either stolen your silverware or knocked over your drink.  It's infuriating!!!  But, you can only be so mad at the kids.  It's the PARENTS who you REALLY wanna take a swing at, right??

Well, apparently, there's been some issues over the years at Grant Central Pizza and Pasta (451 Cherokee Ave. Atlanta, GA 30312) in East Atlanta with "active" kids and they made national news over the last few days with their solution.  With regards to crying babies, GCP offered this statement on Facebook
Dear all present and future patrons: GCP is proud of its reputation as a family restaurant, a title that we will work to keep.  However, a number of our diners have posted unpleasant experiences because of crying and unsupervised children.  To ensure that all diners have an enjoyable lunch or dinner with us, we respectfully ask that parents tend to their crying tots outside
Now, personally, I didn't see anything wrong with this.  I actually think they've gone a little further and said some things that might have REALLY offended some of their customers.  Lol.  However, I realize that pissing off your customers can be bad for business.  But, on the flip side, I have 2 daughters (Kaya - 9, Kendall - 6) and I remember being extra mindful when I was out with them when they were younger and we were out to eat.  Mainly because I didn't want to reinforce the image of the "careless black family with the loud ghetto kids".  Might sound funny but honestly, that's REALLY what it was.  And, we ALL know the stereotype of the white parents who let their kids get away with murder at pretty much any public place.  We joke about it but we all know that, at its' core, its VERY annoying and unnerving.  I just think parents need to be parents at the end of the day.  Sadly, it sometimes takes a rule or policy to force people to make the necessary adjustments.

So, my question to you guys is simple - Do you think Grant Central Pizza is right or justified in issuing this statement to their patrons??  If so, why??  If not, why??  Leave your comments below!

I might go over there today and buy a pizza just to support them.

Best I Ever Had: Hamburger

What: The Ghetto Burger
Where: Ann's Snack Bar (1615 Memorial Dr. Atlanta, GA 30317)

I'm sure many of you have probably HEARD about this burger.  But, HEARING about it doesn't do it any justice.  This is ABSOLUTELY the BEST burger you will EVER have in your ENTIRE LIFE!!!  Miss Ann's world-famous Ghetto Burger has been covered in various national outlets like USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times.  It's even been featured on Food Network and Travel Channel.  But, we don't have to hear or read about it.  This one-of-a-kind creation is right in our own backyard.  Nestled right in the Kirkwood neighborhood, within spitting distance of Club Esso near the intersection of Maynard Terrace and Memorial Dr, sits a small, old lady in a small, old shack, serving a big, bad burger.

This burger is definitely not for you calorie counters.  It's a HUGE double bacon chili cheeseburger made by hand and grilled so perfectly and seasoned so well that you'll want to take a bite and save the rest just to stare at it later.  It's served on a standard sized paper plate that you may not even notice because the burger is covering the entire surface.  It's 5 or 6 inches tall, pretty messy, and extremely tasty!!!  Just to give you some kind of real idea of what kind of meal this is - I had to split the burger with my 2 daughters.  Along with fries and a soda, I ate HALF and my 9 year old and 6 year old divided the other half.  We ate this burger around 5:30pm and were full for the rest of the evening.  And, to provide a little further context, my 6 year old complained the entire time (rather loudly and childishly rude) about how old the place looked and how long the burger took to make.  But, when the food came, she LOVED it!!!  She talked all the way home about how good it was and how big her 1/4 of a burger was.

Yes, everything you've heard about this place is true.  Yes, the wait time for the food can definitely be lengthy.  Yes, Miss Ann can be rude and dismissive at times.  Yes, the place is small, old, and obviously weathered from the 30+ years of being open and never really renovated.  But, ABSOLUTELY YES, the burger is the business!!!

So, this weekend, set aside an hour or two and stop thru and grab a Ghetto Burger.  Don't tell Miss Ann that ATL Bite Life sent you.  She might curse you out.  Lol.  She's done it before.  Check out the video below of my homey, super stylist, Renaldo Nehemiah during his last trip to Ann's Snack Bar.  He took Ludacris with him and fun was had by all.

Happy Eating!!!

Review: EAST ATLANTA THAI & SUSHI | To Live & Thai In The A

Name: East Atlanta Thai & Sushi
Cuisine: Thai
Neighborhood: East Atlanta Village
Address: 467 Flat Shoals Ave. Atlanta, GA 30316
Phone: 404-522-5992
Menu: http://eavthai.com/

In desperate need of a retreat from the most stressful time of year (Christmas), my friend Jessica and I decided to try a new cuisine.   Our choice - East Atlanta Thai & Sushi.

Phuket Paradise Island Cocktail
As soon as we walked in, the bold decor and abstract paintings on the wall gave us a warm welcome.  I immediately noticed the full bar and knew we were in the right place.

To start the madness off right, we ordered the Phuket Paradise Island cocktail.  I won't tell you how I pronounced Phuket but, trust, I was loud, wrong, and completely embarrassed.  Lol.  I will say, while it could have been stronger for my personal taste, it was a very good drink.

Thai Wings
In the spirit of being indecisive,we  dove in headfirst and ordered the Thai Wings and the Yummi-Yummi Roll for our appetizers.  The Thai Wings were perfectly crispy and tossed in a chili sauce, which was a great balance of spicy and sweet.   For novice sushi eaters like Jessica and I, EAV Thai & Sushi offers the option to flash-fry all of their sushi for a small up-charge.  While the sushi aficionados of the world would have been appalled by our selection, the Yummi-Yummi Roll was just that. . .  YUMMY!!!  Absolutely perfect choice for newbies like us.

Yummi-Yummi Rolls

For our entrees, Jessica ordered the Spicy Thai Fried Rice prepared with chicken, bell peppers, and onions in a basil chili sauce which put a spicy twist on the traditional Asian style fried rice.  I decided to go with the Drunken Noodles which as chicken, bell peppers, and onions "drunken" in a spicy chili sauce.  Because I absolutely love spicy food, I asked for my entree to be extra spicy.  They MORE than honored my request.  My mouth and ears were BURNING and I loved every minute of it!!!  Luckily, since we ordered off the lunch menu, I was able to wash some of that heat down with my choice of soup or salad.

Drunken Noodles

Overall, I would have to say that I really enjoyed my time at EAV Thai & Sushi and can't wait to go back.  Everything from the food, to the service, to the bold decor made my experience a great one.

And, don't let me forget to mention that the meal was very reasonably priced.  I highly suggest this place for anyone look to venture out a little bit into the culinary spectrum.
