Foodie News x Restaurant Reviews x Hip-Hop Attitude

In 2010, I (Nick Love) spent over 45% of my annual income eating out at some of Atlanta's best (and worst) restaurants. So, who better to guide you through the city's crowded dining terrain?? Now, I, along with my team of Hip-Hop generation foodies, will expose and review ATL's newest hits, hidden gems, and old favorites. Hopefully, this blog will earn us a free meal or two while we point you guys in the direction of some good food and steer you away from the wackness. Let's eat!!!

A Taste of the Highlands Starts TOMORROW (May 19)

Attention, Lifers!!!  The 10th Annual Taste of the Highlands goes down TOMORROW at John Howell Park Park (at the corner of Virginia and Barnett St) and YOU need to be there!!!  From 2-5pm (another short "taste" like the one in Alpharetta), thousands of local foodies will descend upon one of the most popular dining districts in the city to experience the best this neighborhood has to offer.

If you don't have your tickets yet, you might wanna hurry up and scoop them ASAP.  Word is, they're expecting to sell out on this event.  And, with the 30+ restaurants that they have involved, I'm surprised it isn't sold out already.  There are two participating restaurants in particular that I've been wanting to try - DBA Barbecue and Ecco.  I'm thinking I may get my tix just to check these spots out.  The full list of restaurants can be found here.

If you decide to check this event out, let us know.  Leave comments and reviews of it below.  We'd love to see pictures too.

Til we eat again, enjoy your weekend!

VIDEO: An ATL Bite Life Side Dish: Sheneka Adams @ Yeah! Burger!!!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.  Well, the picture above only says one - WOW!!!  I mean,  what else can be said about Sheneka Adams??  This Athens, GA raised bombshell used social media to catapult herself into magazine spreads, gossip blogs, and celebrity parties.  She's modeling, hosting events, appearing in movies (and the occasional music video) and staying overly relevant in a fast paced internet 3.0 world.  Is it just her ass-ets that keep her in the public eye or is there more to it??  I don't know.  I'm sure that sex tape didn't hurt (no link, fellas).  But, I do know that since I met her one fateful Tuesday evening at Primal nightclub in Midtown back in 2010, she's become the talk of the web.

In our second Side Dish ever, me and Miss Adams took a trip over to Virginia-Highlands to one of my favorite burger spots - Yeah! Burger.   After chopping it up with the owner (who made me love the place even more), I asked Sheneka about making money off of Twitter, her rigorous workout plan (or lack thereof), and which drama-filled reality shows have been knocking down her doors.  Her answers were pretty darn interesting.  And, it just reminded me that she's just a cool ol' country girl from the home of the Bulldogs (peep the UGA hat I'm rockin).

Peep the video below.

As always, Happy Eating!

You Gotta Try: Sweet Potato Pancakes @ Highland Bakery

Name: Highland Bakery
Cuisine: American-Southern Inspired
Neighborhood: Old Fourth Ward
Address: 655 Highland Avenue, #10
Atlanta, Georgia 30312
Phone: 404-586-0772

On many different occasions, I’ve heard people talk about how good the food at Highland Bakery is.  More specifically, their Sweet Potato Pancakes.  Actually, people speak of them so much, I wondered if their menu consisted of anything else.  I have one friend in particular that tells me as often as possible, "we have to go so I can try the Sweet Potato Pancakes".

Now I’ve been a little reluctant to try this place for two reasons.  First, to be quite honest, I don’t care for pancakes.  I ate them enough growing up and, frankly, I find them boring.  So immediately I thought - no thanks, I’ll pass.  Second, there are maybe 6 parking spaces at the restaurant, which explains the never ending line of cars parked on both sides of the street.  But, on this day, I decided to put one leg in front of the other and trek on over to see what all the fuss is about.

As I entered the restaurant, my eyes and nose were pleasantly surprised by the bakery items on display - cookies, cakes, muffins, and scones that looked and smelled delicious!!!  My inner fat girl was ecstatic to learn that Highland Bakery was an ACTUAL bakery and not just a cool name for a restaurant.  I was only able to lust over the bakery items for a moment before our party of three was quickly taken to our table and warmly welcomed by Jasmine, our smiling server.

As I looked over the menu, I was pleased to learn that they offered a full breakfast menu.  Items like Shrimp & Grits and French Toast definitely caught my eyes.  There were also soups, sandwiches, and salads for those of us not in the mood for breakfast.  But, none of that mattered one bit on this day.  My friend made sure that I ordered those Sweet Potato Pancakes.  I threw in a side of turkey sausage just in case these things weren't as good as advertised.

Shortly after our orders were placed, Jasmine’s smiling face reappeared with our food.  At the first sight of the large autumn colored  pancakes topped with toasted pecans and served with caramelized brown sugar syrup, I thought to myself - this better be good.

All I can say is, THANK GOD my friend badgered me into getting the pancakes.  They were DELICIOUS!!!  The pancakes themselves had a sweetness that wasn’t too overwhelming and the addition of the caramelized brown sugar syrup on top of the toasted pecans complimented it perfectly!!!  It was nothing I expected but everything I wanted.  Oh, and the turkey sausage wasn't too shabby either.

The next time you’re in the city looking for a new twist on an old favorite, try the Sweet Potato Pancakes at Highland Bakery.  I promise you won’t be disappointed.  Tell 'em ATL Bite Life sent you.
