Foodie News x Restaurant Reviews x Hip-Hop Attitude

In 2010, I (Nick Love) spent over 45% of my annual income eating out at some of Atlanta's best (and worst) restaurants. So, who better to guide you through the city's crowded dining terrain?? Now, I, along with my team of Hip-Hop generation foodies, will expose and review ATL's newest hits, hidden gems, and old favorites. Hopefully, this blog will earn us a free meal or two while we point you guys in the direction of some good food and steer you away from the wackness. Let's eat!!!

Review: SOUTHERN ART & BOURBON BAR | The Soul of Buckhead

Name: Southern Art & Bourbon Bar
Cuisine: Soul Food ($$$)
Neighborhood: Buckhead
Address: 3315 Peachtree Rd. NE Atlanta, GA 30326
Phone: 404.946.9070
Menu: http://www.southernart.com/southern_art_dinner_menu2.html

As part of ATL Bite Life's Soul Food Month, I've been on a quest to discover some of the hidden soul food gems in the city.  Funny thing about looking for "hidden" restaurants though.  They're never actually hidden.  You just don't know about them.  Case and point, Southern Art & Bourbon Bar.

Interestingly enough, I'd been meaning to stop by this place for quite some time.  I've actually mentioned Southern Art on this site a couple times.  Once during Hotel Restaurant Week (it's attached to the Intercontinental Hotel) and once again back in February while it was one of the featured restaurants during Buckhead Restaurant Week.  It was really just a matter of time before we stopped in.  But then the perfect storm happened.  Soul Food Month met a 50% off deal from Scoutmob.  Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!!!  And chicken is exactly what I had.

Southern Art's main dining room
Let's take it from the top.  After parking in the main hotel deck and walking thru the gorgeous hotel lobby, I found my way over to the main entrance of the restaurant.  Situated approximately 10 feet from a seemingly out of place ham counter (yes, a deli counter with pig carcasses hanging from the ceiling) was a pleasant hostess waiting to seat me.  She pulled the curtain back to reveal a sprawling dining room and then guided me to my seat.

These paintings were hanging from the ceiling of the restaurant
The first thing that caught my eye was the kinda anitquey yet contemporary vibe of the restaurant.  It was an understated fancy if that makes any sense.  It wasn't overly impressed but it had an expensive "feel" that made me take notice.  Also, there were these huge, colorful paintings hanging from the ceiling.  There was one beautiful portrait of the Fox Theater that really caught my eye (see above).

Cheddar biscuits with pickled vegetables
But, I didn't come to see no art.  I came to eat.  Much to my surprise, my table was greeted with some hot cheddar biscuits.  My first thought - this is very Red Lobster-ish.  Lol.  However, the pickled vegetables in a jar that came with the biscuits fancied it right up.  Have you ever had cauliflower and carrots preserved in a jar of vinegar??  Yeah, me either.  It tasted exactly like you'd think.  Pass.  But, those biscuits were INCREDIBLE!!!

Buttermilk Fried Chicken over mashed potatoes - $22
Then came the main entrees.  First up - the Buttermilk Fried Chicken (half a chicken - a thigh, breast, and a wing).  It was served over mashed potatoes with green beans and a few other veggies mixed in.  Delicious!!!  Very well seasoned, very juicy, very sizable portion.  My African-American side came out as I attempted to ask my server for a breast and two wings like I was at Popeyes but I dialed it back to in accordance with where I was.  Lol.  This was extremely tasty though.  I even had some left over for the next day.  Super win!!!

Cornmeal Dusted Catfish - $21
Entree #2 - the Cornmeal Dusted Catfish.  Let me admit, first, I'm not a huge catfish eater.  I like it but it's rarely my first choice on a given day.  I got it purely to keep within our Soul Food theme.  But, I will say this - the Catfish was really good!!!  It was draped over a very similar mix of potatoes and veggies and topped with bacon.  Not bad at all.  I guess my only negative would be that it was only ONE piece of fish.  It wasn't filling to me but maybe, perhaps for a female, it would hit the spot.  I did like it though.

Overall, I really enjoyed Southern Art and I think you will too.  The food was good, the portions were decent, and the ambiance was perfect for date night.   The only downside that I see, in particular for my urban audience, is the price and the portions.  We all know that we could go get chicken and fish and vegetables from any soul food spot in the hood for $7 or $8.  And, while Southern Art does not promote itself as a "soul food" restaurant, the touting of its' southern cuisine makes the comparisons a little easier to make.

Either way, I say grab your girl and head on over and check it out.  If it's good enough for Oprah, it's probably good enough for you.

Til we eat again!

Review: WOODY'S FAMOUS PHILADELPHIA CHEESESTEAKS | We're Pheelin' It

Name: Woody's Famous Philadelphia Cheesesteaks
Cuisine: Sandwiches
Neighborhood: Midtown
Address: 981 Monroe Dr. NE Atlanta, GA 30308
Phone: 404.876.1939
Menu: N/A

After months of hearing about this place, riding by it, and then finally seeing it pop up on Scoutmob, I decided to pop into Woody's Famous Philadelphia Cheesesteaks yesterday and check it out.  SOOOOOOO glad I did.  The service was fast and courteous and that sandwich was was one of the best I'd ever had!!!

Woody's in-store menu
Places like these are what prompted us to create ATL Bite Life.  Small mom & pop shops nestled in cool metro neighborhoods serving incredible food.  Woody's has quite a few things working in its' favor.  First, it sits right on a busy Monroe Dr in between 9th and 10th St in full view of traffic.  Piedmont Park is a hop, skip, and a jump away as well as Midtown Art Cinema and Grady High School.  The other plus is that it stays open til midnight Sunday thru Thursday.  Then, on the weekend, the place is open until 4am.  All my Bite Lifers who are part of #TeamNoSleep or who just want to avoid Krystals or Waffle House after the club, THIS is the place to go!!!

Inside of Woody's
The inside of Woody's is fairly small.  It almost puts in the mind of Ann's Snack Bar in terms of size.  But, have no fear.  There's a little more elbow room than Ann's with what I remember to be around 8 old-school vinyl booths.  There's also a decent sized covered patio that allows for more seating. The biggest plus is that there's no old lady fussing at you to step outside or to get off the phone.  Even with a reasonable line of people inside, the 3-person staff was cool, helpful, patient, and fast.  I may have waited about 7 minutes for my food to come out piping hot.

Woody's patio
But, it's not the size of the building or the patio or even the service that's gonna bring me back to Woody's.  I'm coming back for the cheesesteaks!!!  Now, I usually get my cheesesteaks from Publix.  I think I've been very clear on my stance that Publix has the best sandwiches around.  However, I know that many people have pointed out that the bread there can be harder than you'd normally prefer.  THIS is what makes Woody's version my new hands down favorite.

Woody's classic Philly cheesesteak - $6.45
The bread for their cheesesteak is soft and fluffy like it was prepared in the finest bakery.  But, it didn't crumble or fall apart under the weight of the meat and toppings of the sandwich.  And, believe me, I tested it.  I asked that my sandwich be dressed down with EVERYTHING minus lettuce and tomato.  I had mushrooms, banana peppers, jalapeno peppers, light mayo, and it already came with a filling amount of meat and cheese.  INCREDIBLE!!!  It was so good without being ridiculously greasy as you know cheesesteaks tend to be.

Honestly, the only downside that I could find with Woody's is that busy location.  The traffic getting over to Woody's, especially on a weekend, could potentially make you say "F it" and just grab something else perhaps on Ponce.  And, as with anything in the downtown/midtown area, the parking situation isn't great.  On my count, I only saw 8 spaces and 2 of those were marked for handicapped persons.

Either way, if you're willing to brave Atlanta's stop and go and then potentially park down the street, the Philly cheesesteak at Woody's is WELL WORTH IT!!!  Add some chips and a drink to it and then couple it with your Scoutmob discount and you'll REALLY feel like you got over.  I know I'll be back and I'm hoping I run into some of our Lifers too.

Til we eat again!

ATL Bite Life Is Steady Mobbin'

This almost too much!  2 articles in just a few days.  Had I known this would happen, I would have prepared a speech.  Lol.

Those wonderful people over at my favorite Android app - Scoutmob - asked me to pair some of the music events that are coming to the ATL with some cool restaurants around town.  That was nothing!  I do that all the time.  I'm just still amazed at how far ATL Bite Life has come.  Thank you to all the Lifers out there who have told people about us, retweeted a link to a post, shared a food pic on Facebook, or come to one of our events!  Keep living the Bite Life with us!!!

Review: PAPI'S GRILL | Cubana Just (Okay)

Name: Papi's Grill aka Papi's On Ponce
Cuisine: Cuban, Caribbean
Neighborhood: Old Fourth Ward
Address: 216 Ponce De Leon Ave. NE Atlanta, GA 30308
Phone: (404) 607-1525
Websitehttp://www.papisgrill.com/
Menu: http://www.papisgrill.com/Our_Menu.html

So, at the recommendation of ATL Bite Lifer Shannon, I ventured over to Ponce in the middle of the afternoon a few weeks back to grab a bite a Papi's.  It was a very random trip.  But, I go through these random feelings fairly often nowadays.  I've grown so bored with chicken and burgers that I'll search Scoutmob or ask friends on Twitter for suggestions on something new.  Today's taste was Cuban.  Now, prior to this day, I'd NEVER had Cuban food before.  But, I'd heard about it, it seemed interesting, so I went.

There are 2 entrances into the restaurant (I didn't know that til later).  One on the Ponce De Leon side and the other on Myrtle St.  I parked at a meter on Ponce and entered from that side.  I walked up and this place seemed very small which confused me at first.  I had heard stories of people coming in and sitting down and enjoying lunch here but it seemed kinda impossible given the space in front of me.  As I was just about to order something to go, a waiter led me downstairs to a bigger dining area with tables and a bar.  This was more of what I expected.  However, as I'm sitting at my table, I notice that this place is getting busier and busier and there really weren't enough seats to accommodate the crowd.  And, since there was no real lobby, people just ended up standing by the Myrtle St entrance door and hovering over nearby tables.  I definitely wasn't crazy about that.

(the Authentic Cuban Sandwich)

Finally, my waiter appears.  He hands me a menu and, honestly, EVERYTHING looked good.  The prices were more than affordable and there were about 12 items that I wanted to try just because of the menu descriptions.  But, seeing as how I was a rookie with Cuban food, I played it safe and ordered 2 different sandwiches - the Authentic Cuban Sandwich and the Pan con Bistec (steak) with a side of yellow rice and black beans.   In my mind, I was preparing my mouth for a delicious, filling, fairly spicy meal.  What I got was - full.

(the Pan con Bistec)

Let me say this - the food wasn't bad.  It just wasn't what I expected.  When the food hit the table, it smelled heavenly.  However, the sandwiches were pretty tame.  Nothing really jumped out at me.  And the rice and beans were just. . .  rice and beans. Maybe my expectations or assumptions were off but I felt a little cheated of my "Cuban experience".  In the end, I finished half of both sandwiches and ended up leaving the rest there.  My server was really nice and he told me to come back another time and try something else.  I think I would come back.  I think there's something there on that menu that I would really like but it wasn't on my plate that day.

If any of you have been there and had a good experience, let me know.  Tell me what I should've ordered.  For some strange reason, I wanna give Papi's another chance.

Review: STIR IT UP (w/ 50% Off on Scoutmob)

Name: Stir It Up
Cuisine: Caribbean
Neighborhood: Little 5 Points
Address: 1083 Euclid Ave. Atlanta, GA 30307 (across from Bass Lofts)
Phone Number: (404) 963-2384

By way of an invite from Hip-Hop artist Spot (@beingSPOT), I found myself sitting down in this cozy Caribbean eatery one dreary Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago.  From the sound of the name, I assumed we were meeting at a coffee shop.  But to my delight, there was no java in sight.  Stir It Up is a refreshing addition to Atlanta's dining landscape and a credit to the ever growing Caribbean community here in the city.

Now, when evaluating any restaurant, we all tend to look for great food, great service, and a warm atmosphere.  But, generally speaking, when searching for a quality Caribbean restaurant, you usually have to settle for 1 or 2 out of the 3 criteria.  Stir It Up got all 3 just right.

My initial reaction upon stepping in the door was "this is really nice. . . .for a Jamaican spot".  But upon further inspection, I realized that this place is nice by ANY restaurant's standards.  The solid wood tables and suede upholstered chairs give the restaurant an old world, almost antique store feel.  However, the flat screen TVs and contemporary music add just enough of a modern balance to maintain the hip, funky vibe that L5P is known for.

We were greeted by a lovely hostess who I believe was the manager or owner of the restaurant.  This same woman would also serve as our bartender and waitress too.  And, had it not been for the subtle noises coming from the kitchen, I would've assumed she was cooking as well (thus, contributing to the old In Living Color joke about Jamaicans having multiple jobs).  She ran the establishment effortlessly and with a smile.  Even with 4 other tables seated, our service was excellent!!!

A variety of delicious options were presented to us on a one-sided, brown paper menu.  To our surprise, the prices were beyond reasonable.  Most of the entrees (which included a side item and a salad) were around $8-10.  The most expensive item was the $14 Stewed Oxtails.  I ordered the Jerk Chicken w/ Rice & Peas and plantains and a salad w/ vinaigrette dressing (as recommended by Spot).  While we waited, we were treated to this INCREDIBLE homemade fruit punch (pictured below).  This is a must have!!!  I'm sure I had about 3 glasses BEFORE my meal came.

Then, the food came!!!  First, the linen and food presentation upheld the ambiance that the rest of the restaurant had created.  Second, the vinaigrette dressing on the salad was delicious (I'm usually a ranch dressing guy)!!!  Then, the jerk chicken literally fell off of the bone.  The jerk seasoning was spicy but it also had a barbecue-y quality to it which made it unique to anything I've ever experienced.  And, the rice & peas side was a perfect compliment.  To top it all off, I washed my meal down with another glass of fruit punch.

The only downside to Stir It Up is parking (which is a problem for most of the establishments in Little 5 Points).  Your options are the small paid lot in front of the restaurant, metered parking on Euclid Ave (if you can find it), or free parking on the neighborhood side streets that could potentially put you blocks away.  Even with that, I'd still recommend this spot to anyone looking for quality Caribbean cuisine inside the perimeter.
